Set the time machine to maximum fabulous for our Retro Jukebox afternoon at the Newtown Hotel beer garden!

Harbour City Bears is hosting an afternoon of classic retro, from the rock 'n' roll of the 1950s, disco fever, big hair, synth pop, and '90s bangers, all the way to the guilty pleasures of the early 2000s: Elvis, ABBA, Whitney, Kylie, Madonna, Cher, Spice Girls, Aqua will all be making appearances, along with many other questionable favourites!

Because no retro party is complete without culinary crimes against humanity, we'll also be serving a selection of delightfully dreadful party snacks inspired by the legendary Women's Weekly cookbooks. Devilled eggs, cheese-and-pineapple hedgehogs, jellied surprises, and enough beige food to make your cardiologist nervous. It’s the height of 1970s sophistication.

Harbour City Bears' Woof in the Woods is back for winter!

Our winter camping event is back! We’ve booked out Barrington River Lodge for an extra long weekend, Thursday 13 August to Sunday 16 August.

What's On

The days are free for you to relax and explore the local area.

Thursday night we've got a BBQ and camp movie night, with BBQ dinner supplied, and a camp movie classic, follow by drinks and chats around the fire.

Friday night it's pizza night! The lodge has recently installed a pizza oven, so bring along all your goodies to make your own pizzas! After you've made your dinner, we will have bear beats for us to enjoy, as well as other Friday night activities that our previous attendees know and love- there's a dancefloor, a play area, and bears ready to go!

Saturday night make your own dinner in the shared kitchen or BBQ, or head into town to one of the local pubs. After dinner, relax with a drink around the campfire, play some games, do some stargazing, or find out exactly what it is that bears do in the woods at night.

Accommodation Options

The venue has lots of indoor sleeping space and heating. There’s lots of options to suit every budget.

The Retreat

The most luxurious accommodation is The Retreat, a private cabin separate from the rest of the lodge, with a fully furnished queen bedroom, bathroom, lounge room and full kitchen, as well as a verandah with its own BBQ.

The “Family” Cabin

There’s also another cabin available, with two bedrooms. You can book out the master bedroom with its queen bed or take the bunk beds and trundle bed in the second bedroom. The cabin also has its own bathroom, full kitchen and verandah.

The Lodge

The main building is “The Lodge”. It has lots of rooms in a variety of configurations, as well as a large lounge room and full kitchen. The rooms available as whole rooms or as beds in shared rooms. Bunks, queens, trundles, and whole rooms are available. The beds in the lodge don’t come with bedding, so you’ll have to bring your own sleeping bag or blankets.

Camping

If you’re a hard-core camper, there’s plenty of space to camp on the site as well. Be aware though the site is a little bit smaller than previous camps, so you won’t be able to range quite as far away from the main group.

Important Information

What to pack

If you're camping: you'll need:

A tent, RV, caravan, swag or other shelter
A sleeping bag or other bedding (make sure it's warm as it will get very cold overnight)
A pillow and something soft to sleep on (e.g. an inflatable mattress, a pad, or a camp bed)
A long extension cord for power, and a plug-board
Towels, soap and toiletry items (deodorant, toothbrushes, etc.)
Food
Breakfasts for Friday, Saturday & Sunday
Lunches for Friday and Saturday
Dinner for Friday and Saturday nights
Snacks for the whole weekend
Drinks (soft and hard)
Insect repellent & sunscreen
A hat, sunglasses & thongs (or other slip-on shoes)
Warm clothing (it will get very cold overnight)
A camp chair and table if you have one (there are on-site chairs and tables, but more are always useful)

If you're staying in the accommodation, you'll need:

A sleeping bag or other bed linens (the accommodation has mattresses but no bedding)

CPAP users

If you're staying in a room, there are powerpoints available, however they aren't right next to the beds. You'll need a plugboard and extension cable for your CPAP machine.

If you're camping, ensure you bring an extension cable long enough to run from the main building to your campsite.

Accessibility

The main site is reasonably accessible, it's mostly flat and has few steps. There are some slopes and hills, and the entire property slopes down towards the river.

The movie night will be subtitled in English, however the subtitles may be dialog-only, not full SDH.

Best friends Tess (Ginger Minj) and DeeDee (Jujubee) are train stewardesses who trade their dreary shifts on Stank Rail for the glitzy Glamazonian Express. But when a catastrophic "Stormaganza" threatens to derail the high-speed train and send it crashing into Florida, the duo must team up with the snobby first-class attendants and President Gagwell (RuPaul) to save the day in this outrageous, camp-filled comedy adventure.

This is your opportunity as a member of Harbour City Bears to elect the 2026-27 Committee to manage the club until the next AGM. By attending the AGM, you can express how you would like Harbour City Bears to be managed and what progress to make in the coming year.

Do you have a ton of old clothes that don't fit any more? Want to share your fabulous fashions with your bear kindred?

On Sunday 27 September Harbour City Bears is hosting an apparel swap and sell at the Inner West Pride centre in Newtown! Donate your good old apparel, and you'll be able to pick up an equal number of items from the selection donated by others! If you don’t have any to donate, you can still purchase on the day.

How it works

Donations

If you want to donate items: Bring your clean, good-condition clothes and accessories to us before the event.

No clothes to donate? No problem! You can still come browse and purchase items at very affordable prices.

Leftovers go to a good cause: Anything that doesn't find a new home will be donated to local charities.

You can drop off your items before the event.

Bring items to the committee any Sunday at the Townie
Prefer another time? Just reach out to arrange it!

We'll be having it in conjunction with the AGM- so come along and browse while the procedural stuff is happening!

Join Harbour City Bears for their monthly meeting of gaming fun, Press Paws & Table Tops!

Press Paws is our video gaming event, and we team it up with Table Tops, our tabletop gaming event every month on the 3rd Sunday!

Come along to play Nintendo Switch on the big screen, or settle down with some mates and a board game or two- we've got a wide selection, and you're more than welcome to bring your own.

Our dungeonmaster Richard often runs a beginners' Dungeons & Dragons campaign, so if you're new to D&D, come along and we'll teach you how to play.

The pool tables at the Townie are also open for use, so if you're a learner or a shark, you can have a friendly game with your beary mates!

Best of all, the day leads straight into our Sunday Social, so hang around afterwards to socialise with the bears!

Harbour City Bears is invading Newcastle Again!

The weekend of 24-25 October, we’re heading up north for a weekend of fun activities with the Newcastle Bears!

We've got some fun things planned in Newcastle including Newcastle Pride Fair Day. Also, as always, you’re free to explore Newcastle on your own or with friends.

After that, we’re all meeting up to kick on at Bernie’s Bar, Newcastle’s best LGBTQ+ venue, who is hosting Newcastle Bears’ monthly meetup that night! Bernie’s boasts a great dinner menu, as well as a great selection of cocktails. Meet your northern kindred and catch up with the local scene.

We’ve also booked two entire floors of the Ibis Newcastle exclusively for us, with rooms on sale soon. Of course if you prefer, you can stay elsewhere, but if you’re planning on booking a hotel, book through us as we’ve secured a great rate.

Sunday if you’re not too dusty, we’ll explore the local area with our new friends, and then head home just in time for the Sunday Social at the Townie!
