How did you get involved with HCB?I grew up in Brisbane and was originally involved with Brisbears via some friends. I joined HCB because I was wanting to foster the same type of brotherhood I was a part of in Brisbane.
What do you do as a committee member?
What’s the best thing about being on the committee? The worst?
The best? Since joining the committee I've been tasked with introducing a few of the newcomers around the room and to our events. It brings me happiness to see someone find their feet in the crowd and discover that they do indeed have a place amongst us. The worst? Having to agree to disagree where necessary. Oversights and mistakes will be made. I think people sometimes forget that HCB is run by members (your friends!!) who have put their hands up to organise fun things for you to do.
What would you say to someone who is thinking of getting involved with HCB?I've always said that it takes time and repetition before you will find your place. The guys are largely quite friendly but it will take time to get to know people, so don't become discouraged if you don't integrate immediately (or even within a couple of months). Approaching strangers is quite difficult and it is a two way street after all. I've managed to hook a few people into some group convos and it was great seeing them let their guard down and enjoy the experience.
What do you do in between your HCB commitments?I'm a big fan of trying new foodie places. They don't have to be expensive, just interesting with good company. During summer I'm a total beach bear and you'll typically find me having a swim more often than not. Pretty much enjoy anything other than staying home in terms of weekend activities.
